A spectator selects a card from the deck, commits it to memory, and then buries it in the pack. There is no shuffling from this point on. Upon discussing the marvelous new medical benefits that have been made possible through nanotechnology, the magician removes a piece of “Nano-X-Ray Film” from his pocket and hands it out for examination. After receiving it back, he explains the film's incredible ability to capture x-ray images of practically any material it comes in contact with. However, there is a catch! “This new technology has not been completely perfected and there is an element of danger involved!”
He places the film onto the hand of the spectator who selected the card, to absorb a small sample of her DNA. He explains that this is necessary to activate the film. Then, slowly, he lowers the green film over the top of the deck and to everyone's amazement, the identity of the selected card burns its image onto the film - permanently! As he hands the film out for examination he explains that the film's ability to focus on a single card out of 52 is amazing. But the process damages the rest of a perfectly good deck. The magician turns the cards over and fans them out to reveal that every card in the deck is now completely blank, except for the selected card!

In 1992 Mark devised the original 'Chaos & Order' triumph routine, based on a self-shuffling deck idea that was shown to him by a Chinese magician when he was living out in Hong Kong. A little while later Michael Weber suggested the actual 'Chaos and Order' patter theme, which was incorporated immediately. For a decade Mark performed the routine to a great effect, in all kinds of working environments. Recently, several possible improvements occurred, including a way to increase the number of selections and make the selection process a lot cleaner. One thing led to another… This new version is a substantial improvement on the original and the assimilation of the "Chaos Machine" into the card case is, we think, the finishing touch.
So here is the effect… Two spectators each select a card which they hold onto. The deck is cut in half and placed face-to-face. The deck is temporarily placed in the "Chaos Machine" (otherwise known as the card case). The 'CHAOS' button is pressed... and the deck is immediately removed and spread to show that all 52 cards are now interlaced face-up and face-down, in a truly chaotic state. Both sides of the deck are shown to be in this condition. The spectators' cards are replaced into the chaotic deck, one face up and one facedown. The deck is once again placed into the "Chaos Machine" and this time the 'ORDER' button is pressed. The deck is cleanly tipped out of the case and spread to show that every single card is face-up except for two - the selections.
