The Perfect Gift
It is that time of year again when we are always on the lookout for the perfect gift to buy a loved one. Every year it just seems to get harder to find that perfect present. With life the way it is now, we seem to get what we want when we want it, making finding that perfect gift even harder. Well, Alakazam are here to help! Magic may not seem like your first choice, in fact maybe, it’s something that has never crossed your mind but let me share some thoughts on why magic is such a great gift for anyone young or old.
I personally fell in love with magic at a very young age, I performed my first magic trick when I was around six years old. Everything about magic fascinated me. I genuinely believed it was real and I was in awe of the magicians I would see. To me these people were real superheroes, the true James Bond style characters who were able to do things that no one else could do. I wanted to learn how to do what they did and so my journey began. I remember my mum taking me to the local library where I borrowed my first magic book and not only did I love it, but it also gave me skills that I was unaware of at the time.
Let me explain.
The first thing I notice when I think back is the great feeling of accomplishment. You study the trick; you practice it until you feel ready to show someone and then you perform it, and at that moment you realise that the work and time you had put in was all worth it. It really makes you feel not only proud but excited to study more magic. Most young people today seem to be glued to their computers, iPad’s, games systems or whatever the latest online trend is, well learning magic changes that. It takes them away from their games consoles and has them focusing on other areas, which is a remarkable thing, right?
Learning magic also builds confidence within a child. Performing the magic tricks they have just mastered teaches great communication skills (because as with everything it is not what you do it is how you do it that matters) They become more socially aware of how to interact with real people rather than sitting in front of a screen all day. Lateral thinking is also a great skill to have, and magic gives them that. They learn to solve puzzles and they train their minds to think differently and more creatively. If you want to provide your child with a fun brain training exercise, magic is it. The best thing is they will learn all the skills they require, and they will have fun while they are learning. Magic is also a great Ice Breaker, perfect for when a child is at school and meeting new friends.
Magic is also the gift that keeps on giving, the person performing the trick will continually get reactions from the people watching, which builds confidence but also enables the performing person to grow and then expand their knowledge, once they have mastered their first trick, say something like TK BOLT which is really easy and super amazing to watch, they can then move onto the next trick for instance the MUMMY MYSTERY which, while still amazingly easy, does take a little more practice to do. this continual growth enables them to walk a progressive path to the next trick and before you know it, they have a collection of amazing magic they will not only love learning, but love performing.
Now magic seems like a big mysterious world and so many people do not realise anyone can learn magic. You could walk into our shop and walk out ready to perform a magic trick to your friends and family at the upcoming party or family gathering. As I got older magic also helped me. Not only did it end up being what I do for my living but even before I started Alakazam I used magic to help me in my day-to-day life. As I said magic is a great ice breaker and one of my jobs when I left school was as a computer maintenance salesperson. I would travel around London visiting banks and large companies to have a meeting with their IT department trying to sell them our maintenance services. I would always use magic as an Ice Breaker. I would often print my business card in front of them (using the magic skills I had learned) or perform a card trick or turn paper in to money (which looks so magical and is such an attention grabber). I cannot tell you how many times performing a little trick put me ahead of my competitors. Not only that people would look forward to me visiting their company (very unusual for someone in sales) I would without fail perform and effect on the receptionist as they were always the first barrier a salesperson has to face and once I had, I found their interaction with me changed. I was treated as a friend, we would be on first name terms and chat which I was waiting in reception for my appointment time (and I was always offered a cup of tea while I was waiting, which is always a good sign).
Now, even pushing all of these benefits to the side, magic is just fun, no matter who you are, how old you are or what you do. Being able to perform even just one magic trick at school, work, at a party or a family gathering will give everyone so much joy and the moment you see the smiles your magic will put on people's faces is the moment you want to learn more!
